Choice of organic foods to a smaller Carbon Footprint
â € œJust a 320 acre organic farm is equal to 117 cars taken onto the road, or 1,462,500 miles not driven! â € thatâ € ™ s the conclusion of Chris Hill and Greg Bowman, contributors to Rodale Instituteâ € ™ s NewFarm.org site has been heavily involved in studies of the effects of conventional and organic farming.
Seem to buy target = "_blank"> organic foods â € "whether it's oranges, carrots, soybeans, or lentilsâ € "can be an effective way to decrease your carbon footprint and live green. thatâ € ™ s because organic farming is a strong atmospheric scrubber. By cultivating various crops, organic crops are better able to sequester carbon. In the second, they serve as carbon sinks.
But why are growing organic food better at carbon sequestration than growing food in the traditional way with fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides? Over their 23-year comparison of organic and conventional corn-soybean farming systems, those conclusions were obtained:
- Retention of organic material: A general rule of thumb in agriculture is that the more organic material is retained in the soil, the more carbon is sequestered. Organic farming generally uses manure and cover crops as a means of amending the soil, conventional farming on the other hand, uses chemicals that deplete the organic matter contained in the soil. Pound for pound, organic farming adds instead removes organic material and therefore helps to sequester carbon.
- Lower fuel: Organic farming uses about one third less fossil fuels compared to conventional cropping systems due to a lower dependence on heavy machinery. This lower dependence on fossil fuels results in fewer greenhouse gases used to grow the same amount of food.
These two factors make for a great climate solution. Indeed, if America were to participate in the Kyoto Protocol, it can cover 73% of the proposed goal by converting all 160 million acres of corn and soybean farmland to organic farming methods! It would be like taking nearly 60 million cars from roads.
So in addition to organic foodsâ € ™ better taste and target = "_blank"> higher nutrient content organic foods can help you reduce greenhouse gas emissions! Buy organic from the grocery store, therefore, is a great way to shrink your carbon footprint.
If you want to further enhance your environmental impact, grow your own organic food help, target = "_blank"> compost, natural fertilizers and soil amendments! This is a cost effective way to get your daily nutrients and a fun activity for the whole family.
