Baby cereal in the U.S.?
We just moved to the U.S. with our 7 month old daughter. From the nutritional guidelines in Germany, we are advised not only feed rice cereal, but also millet and spelled. I prefer whole grain / organic variety. As it turns out, I have not been able to find these places, too what I could find was rice, cereals and grains, wheat and barley. All varieties, which I will use later or not at all (wheat, BEC, it is presumed to be allergenic). Do you have any suggestions to me, or is it just how you do it?
You can get millet and spelled at any bulk food store. I would also recommend oatbran. As for organic you would have to go to a whole foods store, or sometimes a shop that sells mainly vitamins will have a small organic section. The names of the Whole Foods store vary widely from place to place. Personally, I never feed my baby, that commercial baby cereal, it's crap. Its full of oil, sugar and chemicals. So I would bake things out of whole oats and / or spelled. You can also puree cooked brown rice is more nutritious than the rice cereal. Some blenders can handle pureeing cooked rice, and it works too. As for organic you have to figure out what local stores, it can be difficult. Check the phone book and see if you have a naturopath or homeopath, the nurse / receptionist should know the names of the local organic stores.
